Social Security Disability (SSD) payments are available to disabled workers who have paid into the Social Security trust fund with their FICA taxes. When you pay into the Social Security trust fund, you are in effect purchasing long-term disability insurance. When you’ve paid enough into the fund, you qualify for SSD benefits if you become disabled and can’t work. Disabled persons who have not paid enough FICA taxes may still be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
