International Adoption

What does International Adoption mean?

International adoption is adopting a child abroad from another country. Because there is a large demand for international adoptions there are adoption agencies that specifically help prospective adoptive parents with international adoptions. International adoption can give an adopted child a loving and stable family, and in some cases it could be the difference between life and death or neglect for this child. Additionally, many foreign countries are eager to facilitate international adoptions, and the completion of the process can be significantly shorter than domestic adoptions. For instance, many international adoptions can be completed within thirteen and eighteen months.

Families considering adoption will also want to understand the laws and regulations of international adoption. For instance, there is an international agreement between participating countries on best adoption procedures which are outlined in the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption. These procedures have basically two goals in mind: understanding the best interest of children for all intercountry adoptions and the prevention of abduction, exploitation, sale, or trafficking of children. The Hague Convention adoptions will also provide protection for birth families, as well as adoptive families. If you are considering an international adoption discuss your options with an adoption lawyer.
